A little over four months after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, the King Richard actor’s 21-year-old daughter, Willow Smith, opened up about the scandal that left him banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years.
In a new interview published on August 5, the Red Table Talk co-host told Billboard that she was largely unphased by the controversy, telling the publication that it didn’t “rock me as much as my own internal demons.”
“I see my whole family as being human, and I love and accept them for all their humanness,” she said in the profile. “Because of the position that we’re in, our humanness sometimes isn’t accepted, and we’re expected to act in a way that isn’t conducive to a healthy human life and isn’t conducive to being honest.”
Though this marks Willow Smith’s first official statement on the topic, the singer previously posted a series of tweets after her father resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on April 2. “The meaning of life is found in challenge,” she wrote at the time, though she did not mention the drama directly. “Life is a series of reactions.”
