Will Rajinikanth’s Jailer beat Kamal Haasan’s Vikram?

Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is setting the box office on fire even in its third week. The film surpassed Baahubali: The Conclusion’s record in Tamil Nadu and is now the highest-grossing film in the state. This is an incredible achievement, especially given that Baahubali 2 has held that record for five years now. Will Rajinikanth’s upcoming film, Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, be able to beat Vikram?

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram features Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in lead roles. The film hit the theatres on June 3 in multiple languages and is having a fantastic run at the box office. Recently, Vikram broke the five-year-long record of Baahubali 2 in Tamil Nadu. It took five years for a Tamil film to achieve this milestone in the homeland.

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai pointed out that Baahubali 2 made a whopping Rs 152 crore. Now, Vikram grossed Rs 155 crore (with Rs 80 crore share) in 17 days to dethrone Baahubali 2.

Here’s the post:

It can be confirmed that #Vikram has broken all existing box-office records in #TamilNadu as it grosses 155Cr (share 80Cr approx) in 17 days & crosses the 5-year old record of #Baahubali2 (152Cr)! #VikramAllTimeRecord #KamalHaasan pic.twitter.com/izAiFxemJK

In 1989, Kamal Haasan’s Apoorva Sagodharargal held the record for the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu. Six years later, Rajinikanth’s Baasha came to claim the spot. 33 years later, Kamal Haasan once again claimed the no 1 spot. Over the years, Rajinikanth, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith’s films have achieved this record.

After Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, Superstar Rajinikanth is coming up with his next outing, Jailer, with Nelson Dilipkumar. All eyes are on Jailer as Rajinikanth and Nelson badly need a superhit venture to redeem themselves. Will Jailer dethrone Vikram in Tamil Nadu?

A theatre owner, on condition of anonymity, said, “It is too soon to say. We haven’t seen any material related to Jailer yet. That said, Rajinikanth has a massive pull at the box office and even today, he can attract lakhs of people to the theatres without major promotions. Jailer could shatter box-office records, but it is to be seen if it will match up to Vikram, which has taken the box office by storm.”

When IndiaToday.in got in touch with trade analyst Ramesh Bala to ask about whether Rajinikanth, Thalapathy Vijay or Ajith would dethrone Vikram, he said that we ‘need to wait and see’.

“Vikram’s theatrical run is not over yet. According to my sources, the film earned nearly Rs 160 crore and the trend is likely to continue for the next two weeks. If this continues, Vikram could end up with Rs 175 crore, which sets the bar really high. Then, it will be difficult to surpass the mark. We will need to wait and see how Vikram ends its theatrical run,” explained Ramesh Bala.

Vikram was a multi-starrer film with Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in lead roles. Another A-lister, Suriya, played a five-minute explosive cameo as Rolex. Also, the film had an in-form director like Lokesh Kanagaraj at the helm.

Ramesh Bala said, “After Baahubali 2, many Rajinikanth, Ajith and Vijay’s films have performed well at the box office in Tamil Nadu. However, they have always fallen short of Rs 5 or Rs 10 crore of the Rs 152 crore record set by Baahubali. In retrospect, these are single hero films. So, in my opinion, a multi-starrer film could do well at the box office. For example, if Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith and Vijay join hands for a film, then all their fans would celebrate the film. Otherwise, the heroes should team up with legendary or in-form directors like Shankar, SS Rajamouli, Lokesh Kanagaraj and Atlee to dethrone Vikram. A film like Indian 2 with Shankar and Kamal Haasan has the potential to beat Vikram.”

Rajinikanth’s last couple of films, including Annaatthe and Darbar, didn’t perform exceptionally well at the box office. Though they have been money-spinners, they weren’t able to shatter box office records. Similarly, Nelson Dilipkumar’s last film, Beast, with Thalapathy Vijay, did not receive favourable reviews. So, Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar badly need a hit at this point in their career.

Only time will tell if Jailer can be the much-needed respite for both Rajinikanth and Nelson. As far as Vikram’s record is concerned, as Ramesh Bala put it, ‘it will be difficult to surpass the mark’.
