Shane Lowry just narrowly made the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship but provided an unforgettable moment with a hole-in-one at the 17th on Saturday.
On Saturday at an extremely weather-affected edition of THE PLAYERS Championship, the wind made the iconic 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass a nightmare to play. Almost one-third of the players who teed it up at the short par-3 put their shots in the water.
Shane Lowry, however, made sure to change the fortunes at the island green on Saturday at the start of his third round.
Moving up the leaderboard already after making the cut by a relatively narrow margin, Lowry delivered an incredible moment that vaulted him further up the board.
THE PLAYERS Championship: Shane Lowry hits hole-in-one on 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass
Complete with a little dance and shimmy after the shot, Lowry aced the 17th hole with a gorgeous shot that caused a huge crowd at TPC Sawgrass to absolutely erupt:
Hitting a hole-in-one on the PGA Tour is rare and incredible in its own right. But to do it at an iconic hole like the island green at the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is something truly, truly special.
And Lowry seemed to recognize that with his emphatic reaction, which included even tossing the ball into the crowd.
PLAYERS Championship: Holes-in-one at 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass in history
If you’re thinking that it’s rare to see an ace at the 17th hole, you’d be right. Prior to Saturday, there had only been nine in history during THE PLAYERS Championship. The last came in 2019 with Ryan Moore putting it in the hole.
Here’s a list of all nine players to hit a hole-in-one at TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole:
Brad Fabel, 1986
Brian Claar, 1991
Fred Couples, 1997
Joey Sindelar, 1999
Paul Azinger, 2000
Miguel Angel Jimenez, 2002
Willy Wilcox, 2016
Sergio Garcia, 2017
Ryan Moore, 2019
Lowry has now added his name to that list, giving us double-digit aces at No. 17. With the recent trends, though, we might see another in the next few years as well.
