U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said her focus in engaging with China will be reducing tensions in the fraught trading relationship between the world’s two largest economic powers. Bilateral ties have come to a point where “it feels kind of like a pile of dry tinder,” Tai said at an Oct. 28 meeting at the National Chicken Council, adding that one misunderstanding “is likely to spark basically just a giant fire with really, really drastic implications for all of us.” China’s top trade negotiator and Vice Premier Liu He has at least twice over the past month expressed a desire to see the United States lift its tariffs and sanctions, including during a virtual meeting with Tai on Oct. 9.
