The Mexico City Label Tiempos Is an Exercise in Color

For Tamayo, Tiempos is a departure from his previous labels, Lumberjack and Ready to Die. “I don’t want to be like these all-black brands like I used to do before, or as I dress,” he says. He derived plenty of inspiration from his surroundings in Mexico City. “There is a history of color in Mexico—Luis Barragán and architects who use specific colors. Then there’s rosa mexicano [Mexican pink],” he says. “The color in Mexico is something that’s been here forever. We are a Mexican brand, and I want it to feel like Mexico.”

He was equally inspired to produce everything in Mexico. According to Tamayo, while the quality is fantastic, there can be minor imperfections. “We decided to make all products in Mexico because we wanted to understand the possibilities and realities of our country in terms of manufacturing, we wanted to be a local brand with a local reflection in the product.”

Tamayo started Tiempos three years ago and sent his samples off to China to be produced. Due to Covid-19, he paused his business and only relaunched this past year. At this point, Tamayo decided to make everything in Mexico. “I said, ‘I’m going to do everything here,’” he adds. “When I manufacture something in China, it’s perfect. When I decided to make it in Mexico, [the product] was not perfect. It also gives personality to the product because it feels like Mexico. In the end, the quality is super nice.”
