Inside Platform’s One Year Anniversary at the Bowery Hotel

I sometimes find art parties intimidating, and yet I’m utterly fascinated by the subculture of the high-end art market and the young people that make its world go around. The masterminds behind Platform, the online art retailer supported by David Zwirner, are changing that often discouraging narrative to make learning about and buying art more approachable.

“Platform is making art much more understandable and much easier to buy for the world who understands art as the physical objects that it has been for centuries,” said Bettina Huang, co-founder of Platform. “The thing that has been really exciting in just this first year is we’ve been able to see that this is an experience that resonates with people that already know and love and buy art and also people who were thinking about it before but never thought they could buy it, never knew how, or didn’t even think about acting on it.”

One year into the tech-meets-fine art endeavor, Platform celebrated its one-year anniversary at the Bowery Hotel and looked back on the early successes of the highly curated marketplace. “There’s a drive to democratize and make it as accessible as possible, but with this drive to curate at the highest level– so bringing the very best quality, and that was really the meeting of the minds,” Lucas Zwirner, co-founder of Platform, told Vogue. “The gallery was bringing this sense of curation– we have the best artists, many of them are here tonight, many of the best gallerists are here tonight. How do you bridge that technology that makes it a seamless delivery? That was a marriage that has made it extremely successful.”

The aforementioned artists and gallerists in attendance included David Zwirner, Platform co-founder Marlene Zwirner, Nate Lowman, Tom Anholt, Travis Boyer, and Miguel Angel Payano Jr., who mingled under the stars after a ninety-degree day with creatives like Richie Shazam, Miranda July, Lazaro Hernandez, Pam Nasr, Brooke Wise, and Rebecca Dayan.
