Cyberpunk 2077 ramps up to 1m active players following Netflix anime, Edgerunners update

CD Projekt recently told investors it will continue building franchise beyond video games

The developer behind Cyberpunk 2077 reports the game has received a recent boost to its player count, with one million people playing on a daily basis.

The figure was announced via the game’s official Twitter account, where CD Projekt Red noted this is a mix of new and returning players, adding: “We wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for being with us and playing the game.”

While the studio did not specifically state the cause for the spike in players, it’s believed to be a combination of two things: the recent debut of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime spin-off for Netflix produced by CD Projekt and Japanese animation studio Trigger, and the accompanying Edgerunners update for the game, which introduced a number of fixes, new features, and cross-save progression between platforms.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a troubled launch in 2020, riddled with technical issues – especially on the previous gen versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Complaints over the game’s quality reached the stage where Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store.

However, CD Projekt has spent the past two years turning this around, launching a next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S back in February that resolved the vast majority of Cyberpunk’s issues.

Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red announced it is working on a story expansion for the game, Phantom Liberty, which will only be released for PC and current-gen consoles.

In a recent investor call, vice president of business development Michał Nowakowski said that while this is the only game expansion currently planned, the studio is “totally committed to developing the Cyberpunk IP further.”

“We’ve invested a lot of time and effort into building this franchise and we definitely want to build on top of what is there right now – new stories, new experiences, new content – not just in the video game format,” he said.

“In terms of expansions, there’s going to be just one major expansion; however, there’s going to be new stuff.”
