HIGHLIGHTS

  • Akshay Kumar has opened up about North vs South debate.
  • ‘We keep dividing ourselves,’ said Akshay.
  • He will next be seen in Prithviraj.

Akshay Kumar is all set to play Prithviraj Chauhan in his upcoming film Prithviraj. The actor is known for not mincing his words and championing social causes, both with his films and personally as well. Akshay has also been someone who paved way for remakes and has supported the growth of every industry. Recently, a Twitter exchange between Ajay Devgn and Kiccha Sudeep stirred a debate on language. While Indian cinema is thriving in its own way with ‘pan-India’ films becoming a popular diet for cinema goers, the language debate continues. Akshay responded to the question by IndiaToday.in and reiterated empathically that he doesn’t believe in this divide.

‘I DON’T BELIEVE IN THIS DIVIDE’

“I don’t believe in this divide. I hate it when someone says South industry and North. We are all one industry and that is what I believe. I think we should stop asking this question. It is important that we understand that this is how Britishers rules us, by dividing us. We have never learnt our lessons. We are still not understanding this part. I think the day we realise that we are one industry, things will start working better for us,” Akshay questioned.

He further added on being questioned about remakes and remixes and asked, why can’t it all co-exist? “Someone questioned me in the morning about remakes and why are we remaking it? I asked why not! What is the problem? Is there a problem in remaking? OMG, Oh My God! , my film was remade in Telugu and became a huge hit. Their Rowdy Rathore we remade and worked for all of us. Why does anyone have a problem? Why shouldn’t it happen? People question on remix songs, why shouldn’t we remix? There are originals being made and then there are remakes, why is anyone having a problem with them coexisting? If a good film is being made in South and we buy its rights and remake it, what is wrong in it?”

He elaborated, “People question our talent. It is not about talent, we all have it, it is about the story connecting with the audience. Now people on Twitter have become critics and want to have an opinion on everything. Why? I would say don’t get carried away. We are all trying to do our work.”

‘UNFORTUNATE THAT THIS DEBATE IS HAPPENING

Stressing on how he hopes that one day this debate ends, he added, “It is unfortunate that this debate is happening, and we are all becoming victims of it. Why can’t we be called one industry? Why are we being called the North and South industry? All our languages are good, we are talking our mother tongues and we are all beautiful. It is unfortunate that we keep dividing ourselves.”

Prithviraj Chauhan releases on June 3, 2022.
